What happens with the world? People keep killing each other and the rate of homicide cases keep increasing. Although our Detective Thompson is a very self-proud man because he has solved countless murder mysteries, he still sad that he can't stopped murder before it happened. Well, at least he can put the guilty party to prison.
Now, here are some of the hardest detective riddles that Thompson ever solved:
Detective Riddle Case 011: Gangster Quarrel
Detective Thompson found the notorious gangster Three-Finger Jim found lying face down on the bar room floor. A bullet had entered his left ear and must have lodged somewhere in his brain as there was no exit wound.
The bullet matched the gun that was owned by Marco the Maniac, another thug, and Jim's rival gang member. It was well known that they had quarrel with each other but frequently visited the same bar.
Marco said that he was the only customer in the bar when Jim came in and started yelling at him. "He was berserk like a lunatic," said Marco. "He pulled out a knife and started coming at me. I shot him in self-defense as he charged head-on at me swinging that knife." Jim's body lying close by still had the knife clutched in his left hand. "He just wouldn't stop coming at me," exclaimed Marco. "I had to shoot, I had no choice."
The only witness was the bartender, another shady character, who agreed with Marco's story.
Detective Thompson just smiled and said, "you guys will have a lot of time in the joint to think of something better than that story." How did he figure that the boys were lying?
Detective Riddle Case 012: Suicide?
Detective Thompson was on vacation to his home village and decided to visit his old friend, Dr. Mercer. At Mercer's home he was shocked to learn that just two days earlier his long time friend had hanged himself.
"Mercer was in excellent health and spirits when I heard from him few weeks ago," Thompson told the sheriff. "I can't believe he committed suicide."
"But he did---I investigated it myself," said the sheriff. "Here's how it all happened."
"Jack, Mercer's young servant, was returning to the house late that night when he spotted a light in the attic. As Jack got out of his car, he saw through the open attic window Mercer knotting a rope around his neck. The other end was tied to a rafter. Then he saw Mercer calmly kick away the small stool he was standing on, and that was the end.
"Jack found the house locked. He had forgotten his key; so he went to the neighbor to call me."
"He repeated to me exactly what I've just told you," said the sheriff.
"When I arrived at Mercer's house, I had to force the front door open." Jack and I then ran up the three floors to the attic. Poor old Mercer was dead. The coroner has no doubt that death was from hanging."
"The attic floor was clear except for the little stool that lay overturned by the door," concluded the sheriff.
"Let's go out to the house, and I can prove to you that the young servant was lying" said Thompson. What lie did our grieving detective spotted?
Detective Riddle Case 013: Another Suicide Mystery?

He sees a shocking view, his friend lying on the table dead with a puddle of blood under him and on the table there is also a book and a napkin. He sees a tape recorder on a nearby table. He presses play and immediately hears the following message:
"Thompson, I knew you would be the first one to hear this and since you were my best friend in life I feel I should tell you. I just can`t handle living any more. I do not want to live any longer. Then Thompson hears a gun shot and a body fall on to the table. Furious, Thompson is sure that his friend was murdered and didn`t commit suicide. How does he know?
Detective Riddle Case 014: The Burglary Job
A man was gunned down in his flat by a burglar, who then ransacked the flat. The case was placed in the capable hands of Inspector Baldwin of Scotland Yard.
Baldwin’s investigation revealed that one man had planned the crime, another had carried it out, and a third had acted as lookout and fourth one was somehow present unaware of plan. Baldwin discussed the case over lunch with an old friend, Detective Thompson.
“It’s quite a case,” Thompson remarked. “Any suspects?”
“Yes indeed. Four. We have conclusive evidence that three of those four were responsible for the crime,” said Baldwin. “The fourth had no prior knowledge of the crime and is completely innocent. The problem is that we’re not sure which of the four are the planner, the gunman, the lookout, and the innocent bystander,” he added.
“I see.” said Thompson while drinking his tea. “What do you know about them at this point?”
“Well, the names of the four are Erick, Joss, Hewitt, and Cooper. Cooper and Joss play tennis together every Saturday. They’re an odd pair! Cooper can’t drive, and Joss has been out of Prison for only a year,” Baldwin answered.
“We know that Erick and Cooper kept the flat under the surveillance for several days just before the day the crime was committed, the 17th. Hewitt and Erick, with their wives, had dinner together on the 12th.”
“We also know that the gunman spent the week before the crime in Edinburgh, and that the innocent bystander was acquainted with the planner and the gunman, but not with the lookout.”
“That’s very helpful,” said Thompson with a smile. “Baldwin, your case is complete!”
Who were the gunner, the planner, the lookout, and the bystander?

Case 014 - How can Cooper be innocent bystander, if he kept the flat under surveillance? It kinda makes him responsible already.
@Anonymous: That's why Cooper is called as "bystander". Erick (as the planner) might deceived him and asked to accompany for a surveillance without telling the real reason. Cooper is innocent because he "somehow unaware of the plan" (stated in 2nd paragraph).
